As an airline pilot I saw this lake this morning flying from Salt Lake City to Boise ID about 100 miles or so north west of Salt Lake City.North of Salt Lake City there is a lake that looks blood red from the air. What lake is this and why?
I don't know what the lake is, but I can make a good guess as to why it's red - I've seen red lakes before here in New Zealand that are used for salt harvesting. The drying process turns the water's edge and the drying salt areas bright blood-red. Not sure why. Any lakes with high concentrations of salt - or soda, for that matter - may have a red colouring. In the area round northern Utah and southern Idaho, there are likely to be any number of salt pans which occasionally fill with water and might produce that colour. I suppose it's a bit off course, but I also see that the geysers at Soda Springs produce areas of red-coloured water...could it have been that far east?
