Salt Lake got them for the winter games something chicago could never get
i bet it was politics on why Chicago was gone first
Salt Lake was one of the many reasons Chicago lost. The US has hosted the Olympics three times in the past 25 years.
BTW you might want to reflect on the differences between the summer and winter games.Isn't it weird that Salt Lake City in 2002 got to host the Olympics, but Chicago got eliminated today?
I agree with everything Will said and Salt Lake City is a great city for winter sports. People go their all the time in the winter time. Salt Lake may not be as popular as Chicago, but it is a beautiful city with a low crime rate.
I also agree with Will. The criteria for determining who will host the summer versus the winter games is different. Also, the fact that the US has hosted so much recently (relatively speaking) I think also worked against them. Let's face it. Even though South America isn't as densely populated as Europe, Asia, Africa and even North America, it was time to have an Olympics there. I think fate was on their side.
Good things have already been said, but I wanted to point out that most Winter Olympic sites are in more obscure cities than Summer Games. Dating back to the '70s, the Winter Games were played in:
Sapporo, Japan (1972)
Innsbruck, Austria (1976)
Lake Placid, United States (1980)
Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (1984)
Calgary, Canada (1988)
Albertville, France (1992)
Lillehammer, Norway (1994)
Nagano, Japan (1998)
Salt Lake City, United States (2002)
Turin, Italy (2006)
Some recognizable venues, but nothing compared to the bid cities for 2016. Many of the cities listed above are not economic-influencing cities because of their geography and climate.
My two cents.
good point! why MORMONS AND NOT A GANG RIDDEN CITY? GO FIGURE
