What to wear in Salt Lake City, Utah?

I'm visiting Salt Lake City at the end of this November. I know it will be pretty cold, but what exactly should I take with me? Should I wear many layers? I want to look nice/fashion-forward since I have not seen the people I will be visiting in a long time. If it helps any, I'm a teenager that loves fashion. Any advice/lists/help is appreciated. Thanks!

I live in Utah and suggest that you could wear layers if you want to. I would take a long a coat with you becasue it is cold here now and i am sure that it maybe even colder at the end of November we might even have snow on the ground. You should wear long pants instead of shorts.

It's going to be a warmer than usual winter here. Jeans, long sleeve shirt and a medium to heavy coat is all you'll need to stay warm if you're going to be in the actual city seeing as we keep all of our shops nice and toasty to warm up from the snow. If you're going to stay out longer than that just wear some thermals under everything.
I think you should wear clothes. What to wear in Salt Lake City, Utah?
Try mini skirts with legging and then wear cute winter jackets with those adorable fur hoods. then wear scarfs with the matching hat and gloves... That would be pretty cute.

P.S. Try big hoop earrings too Hope I'm help!!!
It's pretty cold there so i would suggest you layer up your clothing. Think blazers, sweaters, long sleeve tee shirts, skinny jeans and fall boots. A nice pea coat and trench will work as well. They are perfect for winter because they aren't to thin and they aren't to thick either.
    wear clothes.
Get skinny jeans and BearPaw boots

And a few hoodies, and long sleeve "already layered" shirts.

    Also, some cute hats.

The thing about Salt Lake City is that the weather is VERY unpredictable. I know that by first hand experience. You could be driving to school in a blizzard with the heater blasting in the morning and then driving home one or two hours later with the A/C on. Seeing how you'll be coming around winter time, I suggest you pack sweaters and coats and just lots of warm clothing. It gets bitter cold over here, so wearing layers wouldn't hurt. Also, bring shoes that can help you walk in the snow well, preferably boots. Bring a cute wool hat to wear to keep your ears warm. I love winter clothes and I love fashion as well, and I think it's very easy to look fashionable, but at the same time, stay warm. Hope that helps! :)

Oh, don't forget your gloves and mittens! What to wear in Salt Lake City, Utah?
Usually about this time of year in Utah it is around 40-60 degrees, sometimes sunny sometimes rainy. Sometimes, but not very often it snows but melts like the next day. So probably wear jeans, a long sleeved shirt and a light jacket. Bring sneakers (DEFINATELY not sandals), and boots just in case.

    Hope this helps,

Here is going to be the Salt Lake City forecast:

    http://www.weather.com/outlook/driving/i鈥?/a>

As you can see it is going to be very chilly out, with some rain. Which means, you definitely need to bring layers.

    For tops I would bring:

    1. One tank top

    2. At least two t-shirts

    3. At least one long-sleeve shirt

    4. One light rain jacket

    5. One bulky coat

    For bottoms I would bring:

    1. At least 2 pairs of jeans

    2. Sweats (optional)

I love Forever 21. They have really cute stuff there. You should check it out.

Here are some cute things you could get for the occasion (or similar):

Who is the better agency? Salt Lake County Sheriff or Salt Lake City Police??

I am a Deputy in San Diego looking to hopefully transfer to Salt Lake Area. Which agency is better to work for? Any pros and cons for each??Who is the better agency? Salt Lake County Sheriff or Salt Lake City Police??
    1. check out the local newspapers for stories about the different police agencies, scandals, exposes, etc. The newspapers do a better job than broadcast media because they can see a story through instead of having to drop it for the next sound bite. Try blogs and websites, but Custodiet Emptor (Copper Beware). They might have their own agenda.

    2. Consider the culture/lifestyle you're moving to. Are you LDS? Would you be able to fit in, though you don't really fit in? Would your family be happy there?

    3. Consider 5, 10 years down the line. Promotion opportunities? Career/training enhancement opportunities, like schooling, seminars, workshops, even paid for college courses

4.Reputation for mentoring, networking, old boys, nepotism, politics -- good or bad or the same old same old?

    5. Courthouse atmosphere -- aggressive prosecutors, tough judges, liberal/laid-back or hang-'em-all attitude , interagency rivalries,lazy city/county attorneys

    6. Most important. Can you live without coffee?Who is the better agency? Salt Lake County Sheriff or Salt Lake City Police??
I've never worked in that area but from my experience and other officer's I know sometimes it's better to work for a county agency rather than the city agency. If it's possible see if you can look at what kind of contracts each one holds with their associations, pay scale, and if either one has a high turn over rate (usually a bad sign).

Does anyone know where I can find a Netherland Dwarf rabbit breeder somewhere close to Salt Lake Utah?

Please i really need to find a breeder close to Salt Lake City Utah so that I can buy my daughter one!!!!!Does anyone know where I can find a Netherland Dwarf rabbit breeder somewhere close to Salt Lake Utah?
How old is your daughter? If she is young, a dwarf is probably not the right rabbit for her! Small child = Big Rabbit, especially if it is her first.

    Read this article: http://www.michiganrabbitrescue.org/soyo鈥?/a>

I would recommend getting your rabbit from a rescue center. The bunnies there really need homes and buy from a pet store only promotes unnecessary breeding. The rabbits at the shelter are generally full grown (but they are not old), which is a good thing. Pet stores often don't even know what breed bunnies they have, and you get something bigger than you are expecting. Also, bunnies go through a "teenage" stage where they do everything they can to try to push the limits. This may scare your daughter, should pushing the limits including nipping. Shelters spay/neuter the bunnies, which is preventative not only in breeding terms, but health and temperament also. A rabbit at is 2 years old is good for a child. Rabbits live 6-8 years, sometimes as long as 12, you will still have plenty of time.

Please consider getting a bonded pair from a shelter. Bunnies are social animals, and enjoy company of their own kind.

I could not locate a shelter in Salt Lake, and I am from Michigan. There is one in Kanah, UT Here is there link:

Try your local shelter before spending money on rabbits in the store. The rabbits in the store are sometimes sick and the ones at the shelter are fixed and seen by a vet before being put up for adoption. You also have a larger variety of breeds at the animals shelter. . you may want a netherland dwarf but you may fall in love with another breed of rabbit.

If you go do a search at http://www.familysearch.org for James Livingston (sp?) who died in 1874, the first result will be under a header titled "Ancestral File." If you click on that, and then Pedigree, you can see a near complete pedigree chart for him going back 4-5 generations into the 1600s in Scotland.

    His parents are listed as:

    James Livingston

    Birth: 23 Mar 1783

    Reidraw, Dalgety, Fife, Scotland

    Christening: 30 Mar 1783

    , Dalgety, Fife, Scotland

Odd question, given UT and SLC history it's a "given" that James would be listed at familysearch.org - and that anyone questioning that would have known where to look.

The problem is that so many of the ancestral files are rife with poor genealogical research and others copy the bad work wholesale *because* they found it at LDS. Bah!
NO hostility intended, but NO- you would not be correct in ever "assuming" something in good genealogical circles.

As immediately shown by replies... you are coming up with one set of parents, and other "files" show something else. Unless you (or others) have researched for a while, you can't imagine how common that really is. I know of mistakes in every single online location, and many offline sources.

My advice is to step back and EVALUATE the source of your information, compared to the other listings. Hopefully, the others will have provided what they are using as a source to back up their conclusion.

It is quite possible that Mr Livingstone was prominent enough to appear in a biography or other historical record, in which his parents were stated. There may be other original records available, in Utah or in Scotland. There might be a family Bible. The answers below MAY be correct, or it may be that you found some source that shows the earlier researchers to have jumped to a false conclusion.

I thoroughly love the internet, but also realize that many researchers have a false sense of security, in that they easily find someone else's research, and never have the opening to discover how to verify their findings. I learned this lesson pre internet, after proudly discussing the parentage of one ancestor, taken from a published (professional) source. A few months later, I found court documents showing the conclusion to be completely wrong. I was red-faced for a while for having shared it, but it sure taught me something about how to back up my conclusions.

SRSLY. They hate gambling in Utah, and the legal authorities would raid poker clubs if they heard about real cash tournaments. They've harassed some poker clubs out of existence.

Why going to Utah for Skiing, is it best to stay in Salt Lake City or at one of the resorts?

I'm planning a trip to Utah in Feburary for skiing, for two weeks. Hoping to ski at the mountains around Salt Lake City. Is it best to stay in Salt Lake City and travel up tot he different mountains? Is there go shuttle bus transport to the mountains? or is it best to stay at one of a couple of the mountain resorts? Would I need to hire a car? (I'm from overseas). Would love to hear any advice. Why going to Utah for Skiing, is it best to stay in Salt Lake City or at one of the resorts?
If you're skiing the "west side" areas, then Crickey is right. Stay in SLC. There's not much to do at night at, say, Alta %26amp; Snowbird.

However, you might want to consider Park City (east side). Great night life, close to a number of different areas as well (Park City, Deer Valley, The Canyons).

Or north if SLC is Ogden and Logan.

Below is a website you may find useful. Why going to Utah for Skiing, is it best to stay in Salt Lake City or at one of the resorts?
hire a car (we call it "rent a car" in the US) and stay in SLC. It's much much cheaper than staying at a resort, and it's only about a 15-20 minute ride to tons and tons of different areas.

  • Is the art institute of salt lake a scam?

im plannin on enrolling at the art institute of salt lake in july but i want to know if im makin a right choice or is it another scam? Ive looked up sites and been getting mixed results some people have no problems wit them others have dropped out cuz of them. i dont want to make the wrong choice and fall into debit wit them....any suggestions? Is the art institute of salt lake a scam?
If its one of the Art Institutes run by EDMC (all of them that use the

AI logo), avoid them like a plague. They're not an art school

employers take seriously. They're open enrollment, they take ANYONE.

They just want the financial aid.

If you ask me, they're an elaborate corporate scam to funnel as many

Government Pell grants and guaranteed loans out of students as they

can and leave the students with the bill.

They're like McDonald's of Art "Colleges". They're a chain that is

popping up everywhere. They buy out dying schools, rename them, keep

    the accreditation.

They may seem like they would be good, but it is all smoke and

mirrors. Pretty building with pretty computers. Meanwhile, it will

    just ruin your life.

The market demand they say they're meeting is not the demand of the

Job market, its the demand of the students. Students that graduated AI

are struggling to get jobs and have over more than $50,000+ or

$90,000+ in debt depending on what degree they went for. Degrees that

are worthless in the job market.

Basically, AI is a degree mill. They use bloated success stats and

circle logic to back them up.

They count students working at Toys R Us as in the field. Avoid them

if you want to actually have a decent future.

If you really want to pursue your passion, go to a community college,

study fine art, and then transfer into a state school. It will be

cheaper and the money you save you can buy your own equipment and

STILL have money left over for a better future.

Their job leads are bogus, they go to Monster, Craigslist, and career

builder just like everyone else. Their top employer is HOME DEPOT

(Check their own website) and I guarantee none of those are art jobs.

Don't make the same mistake my friends and I did. We'll be paying for

it for the rest of our lives.

If you go with AI you'll be folding clothes at Target or hawking video

games at Toys R Us for $8.25 an hour and struggling to pay $90,000+

with bill collectors haunting your every waking moment for the REST OF

YOUR LIFE with no way to stop them because there is no bankruptcy

    protection on Student loans.

Please please please make sure you check out these news articles and

accounts from students who got burned by AI. They're destroying more

lives than helping. The government is TRYING to cut the For-profit

colleges off the aid because the students are getting burned but these

schools are throwing around their money to pretend they're making

    things better.
I would look around. No there not a scam but they are not the best either. It is like one of those art schools you get into for drawing the turtle and sending it back to them? Everyone can be an artist to them.

If you really want to go to school and don't want to go into MONSTER debt. Try a community college. It is cheap, they usually have a great art department. You can get a two year degree and transfer to a major college after graduation. You will learn traditional and modern techniques on the community level. Just make sure you major is ART not Liberal Arts. Liberal Arts is for the kids who don't know what they want to do Fine Art is well, Fine Art.

I visited SLC 2 years ago and had a great time. One of my favorite places. There are plenty of things to see and do there. Antelope Island was my favorite because it's close to SLC and they have a beach, hiking trails, and free-roaming buffalo in the park. Also went to the zoo, Tracey Aviary, and to Snowbird. Took the tram to the top of the mountain there. Great view! Also, a little cooler up there so be prepared. Saw the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. You'll want to visit Great Salt Lake park, too. Also close to the city. If you go when it's warm, you can float in the water. A good website to check out is visitsaltlake.com for more information. I found a car is a necessity to get to all the attractions out there. The hotels are very economical compared to other parts of the country. Have fun! What should I do in or around Salt Lake City?
ive never been there but i know there used to be a boot camp next to the lake for the WW2 navy soldiers. you could see if they have a museum or somehting.

Will I need chains for traveling from Portland, OR to Salt Lake City in early November?

Like the question says, I'm contemplating a drive from Portland, OR to Salt Lake City in early November. I just have a regular Sedan which as is, cannot drive in the snow or in ice. Will I be just fine, or should I use chains? If I need chains, for how much of the trip will I need to use them? ThanksWill I need chains for traveling from Portland, OR to Salt Lake City in early November?
If you don't carry chains you may be prevented from crossing the passes. November can bring big snow.
Hey,no need to worry about it.early November is still the fall season unless the winter season arrives early as it happens sometimes.you'll be fine on your way there, but on your way back,I can't tell you.it all depends on how long you'll stay in Salt Lake City where the winter can be kind of harsh.by the way,I love Portland.it's a green, nice city. Will I need chains for traveling from Portland, OR to Salt Lake City in early November?
If you live in Oregon, you should invest in a set of studded snow tires and have chains as a back up. I drove 2 winters in Idaho with regular radial tires and 240 lbs of sand in my truck bed. Take the time to learn how your vehicle reacts in bad weather. It's not the vehicle but, the driver. I've seen 4x4's stuck in the snow due to inexperienced drivers. I was used to snow having grown up in PA in the 60's.

Does Calgary have Olympic Venues open to the public for use like in Lake Placid or Salt Lake?

In Lake Placid and Salt Lake, there are public rides for bobsledding and luge(same tracks held for the Olmypics). The Olympic speedskating tracks, olympic skiing mountains, and ice rinks are open to the public. Does Calgary do this as well? I've already taken a vacation to Lake Placid and am now wanting to go to Calgary and was wonderin if the Calgary olympic facilities are open to the public?Does Calgary have Olympic Venues open to the public for use like in Lake Placid or Salt Lake?
try to find the main website and see if they are offered.
Contact the Calgary Visitor's Bureau...they would have a complete listing of the venues which have public access and the hours....www.tourismcalgary - you may have to contact them directly with this specific question.Does Calgary have Olympic Venues open to the public for use like in Lake Placid or Salt Lake?
yup, they are mostly used for training Canadian athletes, but i think they have public hours and stuff too. i went on a tour of the ski jumps when i was a kid.
Absolutely. You can ski, ride a bobsled, luge, snowboard, tour the facilities including the Centre of Excellence, the ski jump tower, etc. Be sure to check seasonal closing dates.

Salt Lake City to Yellowstone, your favorite places to visit?

My family and I are taking the drive from Salt Lake City to Yellowstone and back over 7 days in August. What are the "must see" places to go? Good routes there and back, for scenery, would be well received too! Thank you for your time.Salt Lake City to Yellowstone, your favorite places to visit?
Here are some ideas. Please get a good recent map to be sure. These are suggestions so don't hold me to how good they are.Salt Lake City is a big city.Beautiful views of mountains.Lots of shopping, restaurants, and the Mormon temple. You go north by I15.Lots of beautiful mountains.Lots of long stretches between towns so take note for gas, food, etc.Pocatello is the first bigger town. It's a college town. Then there's Blackfoot-Potato capital of the world and a potato museum. You used to be able to get a free baked potato here with each paid admission. You can take your picture in front of a large potato outside. Then Idaho Falls. There's a museum there.Ithink there's an exhibit on the history of dogs, but it changes. You can go see the falls. There are restaurants by the falls.I think you get highway 20 here.I think there's a museum where the first tv was made.It might be in Rigby or?Again, long stretchess of beautiful mountains and scenery and few places to stop.At West Yellowstone Montana it's a nice town, lots of nice shops.Your parents can gamble. Then there's yellowstone.Old Faithful Geyser erupts I think every hour (not sure). You can spot buffalo and elk,but maybe not in Aug.(too crowded)You can walk on pathways and drive to see geysers.Look at your brochure to see which exits close at what time.My brother had to drive way out of his way to get out. Then you must go to Grand Teton National Park and stay at Jackson Wyoming. This is a really nice western town. . a little on the pricy side, but worth it.The Tetons (mountains)are spectacular!Lots of shops, places to eat.You can go on the river on a raft.Go with the top companys as there are accidents. You can buy a picture of yourself that's pretty neat.I would spend 2 days at yellowstone and 3 at Jackson, but that's just my preference.I guess you could find a scenic route back through Wyoming or go back to I15.Again,I'm just trying to give you guys some ideas.Have fun and good luck on your trip!Salt Lake City to Yellowstone, your favorite places to visit?

  • What part of the world is directly on the other side of Salt Lake City, Utah?

I am trying to figure out what would be the fartherst city to visit from Salt Lake City, Utah. I am guessing it is something in the Middle East. What part of the world is directly on the other side of Salt Lake City, Utah?
You need to be 180 degrees from salt lake city

The latitude and longitud of the Salt Lake City Airport is 40 47 18/111 58 38 W

We can clean that up to a more workable

    41 N/112 W

If we stay on the latitude parallel then all we gotta do is go east %26gt;subtract 180 from 112 = 68 E degrees

Then find where in the world 42N/68E is

Lisbon is on about the same latitude

So figure it's approx 60 degrees east of Lisbon@ 60 minutes to a degree and 1 minute = i nautical mile

    Have fun with the math

    %26lt;%26lt;Update

Athens Greece is basically 42N/23 E

    Moscow Russia is 55N/37 E

    Kabul Afghanistan is 35N/69 E

According to this site, the Antipode of Salt Lake City is in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

    http://www.antipodemap.com/

According to this website, http://map.talleye.com/bighole.php you end up at these coordinates, 40掳45鈥?0鈥砈, 068掳06鈥?5鈥矱 which is in the exact same spot as the previous map.

Since that location is in the middle of the ocean, approx half way in between Australia and South Africa. The two cities that show up closest to that location is Perth, Australia and Durban, South Africa.

Will lake malawi become a salt lake in the next 100,000 to 1000,000 years?

I am just curious because all the salts and minerals don't get out of the lake so the water is becoming harder everyday so please answer my question with a nice long explanation. Will lake malawi become a salt lake in the next 100,000 to 1000,000 years?
it all depends on evaporation and the earth's atmosphere. if there is a lot of rain and its humid the air already has water and it can go to a certain amount which will eventually cause rain. if it is dry and hot then evaporation rates can increases. so the lake can eventually evaporate leaving behind salt deposits in as long as 100,000 years. but it all depends on the earth's atmosphere

    C. developed an efficient irrigation system and made the desert bloom through cooperative labor.

I'd like to see a source of P.'s information. Has he ever been to Utah? It's a desert in most of the valleys - very obviously so. Read any of the many existing journals of those that visited the area before it's settlement by the Mormons, and it attests to this fact (including but not limited to the writings of Father Silvestre V茅lez de Escalante, Jim Bridger %26amp; the Donner Party). There's a reason the Paiute, Goshute, Shoshone, and Ute only visited the areas where mountain rivers emptied into the valleys.

And as for the de-timbered mountains - well, they seem to be doing just fine. In fact, I've camped in them many times and often had a hard time find a place for a tent due to the trees.
C Developed a irrigation system and destroyed the natural environment. They sent out huge hunting parties and slaughtered the local wolves, eagles, bears, etc.

Contrary to popular myth, the Salt Lake basin was a fairly green and welcoming place. You can still see that in the canyon areas - which the pioneers stripped of timber.

Get a shuttle definitely...there are several companies that run counters at one end of the baggage claim area...fares will run you something in the neighborhood of 40 bucks give or take, but don't quote me. Also, if you are going to be staying at on-campus housing, it would probably be a good idea to contact the accommodation office before you go to see whether or not you should go directly to your residence hall (dorm)...you don't want to lug your bags across campus...it ain't fun.

This site lists about a dozen places which might interest you. Each name on the list is accompanied by a small photo, an address, a telephone number, and a brief but informative review. The reviews highlight a few key features of each establishment. For example, one place serves pulled pork sandwiches, another features deep-fried catfish and live jazz music, another is considered a great sports bar, etc. If you click the photos, they open to the official webpages.

When the Jazz moved to Salt Lake City, why did they not change the name of the franchise?

When the New Orleans Jazz NBA franchise moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, why did they not bother to change the name of the franchise to reflect the city of Salt Lake City? The name "Jazz" does not seem to fit the city well. Was there ever an effort to change the name to something closer to home? Also, why did they chose "Utah" over "Salt Lake"?When the Jazz moved to Salt Lake City, why did they not change the name of the franchise?
Sure beats me. They were ours and seemed to be well supported even though they mostly played at the Municipal Auditorium (my Father took me once and I still have Pistol Pete's autograph).

I guess they couldn't call them the Utah Polygamists!
As far as Jazz goes, it probably was to establish a little continuity with the previous franchise -- no matter how silly it was to keep it in Utah.

As for the city/state, ownership probably was trying to market the team to the entire state, since it was the first pro franchise in the state.

By the way, there were lakes in Minneapolis, but not many in Los Angeles when that franchise moved West. When the Jazz moved to Salt Lake City, why did they not change the name of the franchise?
name recognition. it is weird though since in utah, they don't allow music.

I've been there a few times and find it rather similar to the climate of Colorado, where I used to live. In general, Salt Lake City has a dry climate but it can get cold in the winter. I think it snows more there that it does where I lived in Colorado.

Are there any types of palm trees that could live in Salt Lake City?

I absolutely love tropical plants, especially palms!! I want to plant some outside and am wondering if there are any that could stay alive in Salt Lake City!??Are there any types of palm trees that could live in Salt Lake City?
Sorry, it's far too cold in SLC for palms to live. I just moved from Oregon where they were able to grown a couple of the more cold hardy palms in the Willamette Valley and near the coast, but that was entirely due to the maritime influence of the Pacific Ocean and causes much more mild temperatures for the given latitude.

If you really want to grow palms, a green house is probably your only option.

Why salt lake city does not have a football team?

I wonder why salt lake city does not have a football team on the NFL been one mayor city in the United States. Is Football popular in Utah ???Why salt lake city does not have a football team?
Basically, Jacksonville, Charlotte and Houston were more attractive markets for the most recent expansions.

It's not likely to happen soon, either, as football revenues have been been growing enough to entice expansionWhy salt lake city does not have a football team?
First it's a Mormon city and Mormons are instructed by their heavenly father to spend all day at church on Sundays, so half of the population wouldn't be interested in tickets. Well, unless they can show the church don, or boss or whatever they call him, that buying tickets leads to more money for the church. This mindset is why NFL players like Steve Young are not consigned to hell for working on Sundays. Second it's a college town, the University of Utah is the big draw, third I don't think even absent the Mormon factor there's really enough people there to support a team these days.

MCI's Neighborhood program is awesome. You pay one rate for everything: all calls (minus international), voice mail, call forwarding, call waiting, anonymous call rejection, etc.

You get emails when you have new voice mails and you have the option of checking them online (like from work).

$50 a month, plus taxes. They have to compete with the cel industry.

The few times I had to call customer service, they were great, unlike SBC. The call centers are in America, not outsourced, the hold times were short and the employees were always helpful.

I was very happy when I had them a few years ago. I had to change due to moving. I'm going back to them this month.
you do not need a computer to use VoIP.

You need broadband internet service, then get a phone box from vonage or lingo and plug it to the cable or dsl modem and you should be able to phone straight away.

Any other option would be quite expensive. with lingo, it's 20 per months for unlimited calls to usa, canada and western europe.

add maybe 15 for dsl and your bottom line is 35 dollars.
Try my site to check out the services being offered in your area. They offer very cheap all distance plans.

  • I'll be in Salt Lake City/Provo for one day. What should I do for fun?

I am going to a friend's wedding in Provo area and I'll have some free time to do something in the area for one day, I'd like to explore the outdoors-hiking etc. around the area. What do you recommend? What are some good and not too strenuous day hikes--like 3-4 hours at the most?

I want to float in the Salt Lake, but I hear it's kind of gross and not worth it except for the novelty. What is your opinion?

The Timpanogos(?) caves seemed interesting too--How long does that take and is it interesting?I'll be in Salt Lake City/Provo for one day. What should I do for fun?
We used to live in the Salt Lake metro area. It is a wonderful area to visit, especially if you appreciate the outdoors. Before you think about what best to do, I think you need to get a better idea of the actual travel time involved. You are looking at 45 minutes to an hour just to get from Provo to SLC proper. If you only have a day, you really need to decide what you most want to do.

The best way to see the Great Salt Lake is by going onto Antelope Island. It is a very interesting trip, but a long one. If I remember correctly, it is almost another 30 minutes north of SLC. You have to cross a long, slow moving causeway to get there. If your primary reason for going to the Great Salt Lake is to float in it, I would recommend thinking it over. "Kind of gross" does not even begin to describe the water. It is full of brine shrimp, so anyone that goes into the water comes out covered with them. It has a sort of rancid smell and depending on the time of year, there are little tiny flies that will swarm you. All of that said, it is gorgeous to see and you have an opportunity to view the buffalo that live on the island.

If you like hiking, you can't beat the hike to Timpanogas! It is beauty beyond words and the cave is like nothing you'll ever experience unless you are trully a cave explorer. Be warned, it is a long and difficult hike. It is so steep that the trail is one switch back after the other and there is not an guide rail or other barrier between you, the trail, and the cliff. The path is about 4 ft wide. Bring as much water as you can carry, but don't forget how heavy water is! And bring food to eat! There are no concession stands when you get to the cave! Don't forget that hiking down is often more difficult and dangerous then hiking up! Again, after saying all of that, my husband, 3 little girls and I did the hike. It took us several hours - I don't recall how many. Our girls were about 18 months (carried on my husband's back in a carrier), 4 yrs and 8 yrs. We did it, so I am sure an able bodied adult who enjoys hiking can do it!! It is one experience I will never forget! I am so glad that we did it, but don't fool yourself into thinking it is an easy hike. You will need good hiking shoes for sure and one of those hiking poles would have been a Godsend!

I think you can get to Timpanogas from a loop road (maybe American Fork Canyon?) and it was a beautiful drive with lots of short hikes along the route.

One other important note, especially if you are from a metro area, do not underestimate the gas level in your car! If you head out to Timpanogas, Antelope Island, or anything described as a "scenic loop" fill up your tank! You will quickly discover that you are out West!

Whatever you choose to do, I hope you enjoy your time in SLC. We absolutely loved our 20 months living there!

how much would a train ticket from cincinnati (or toledo) to salt lake city cost, and how long would it take?Traveling from cincinnati to salt lake city help?
Like booking a flight, the cost changes day-to-day, usually increasing the closer to the day of the trip you get.

The Amtrak site says that a trip booked right now for a departure on 2/5 (the closest date I could book) costs $325 one-way ($499 round-trip, not including taxes) and takes 44 hours (there is a connection in Chicago).

Meanwhile, a plane ticket for the same departure is going to cost $710, BUT it's only going to take 4 hours to get there. One-way would be $540. Also, keep in mind that these prices are way expensive because I looked up flights for THIS Saturday... Flights from CVG to SLC in two weeks are only $335 round-trip.

Not sure why anyone would take the train that far instead of flying and wasting 2 days of vacation.Traveling from cincinnati to salt lake city help?
This trip takes about 48 hours. Cost will vary depending on how far ahead you book (I found rates between $174 and $260 each way).

Is there a vegan grocery store in salt lake county, utah?

Generally there aren't "vegan groceries", but health food stores and whole food markets will have plenty of specialty products suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

You can get fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains at almost any grocery, which form the bulk of the vegan diet. Throw in some tofu/seitan and other proteins, and you're good to go.

Salt Lake City is known for being pretty veg-friendly:

I need to plan my honeymoon, but we can't really afford to go that far. We live in Salt Lake, so that's out, and camping seems ... ill-suited for honeymooning. Also to consider: we hate Park City and also don't want to be in a hotel where people are camping. That's tacky. What's left? Idaho? Southeastern Oregon? Elko? What's a fun place to vacation in Utah that's not camping or in Salt Lake?
Idaho might be an option, but there's not much to do there in the way of touristy activities. I do like the Pocatello area, downtown is very nice, and there is a themed inn there called the Black Swan Inn that might be fun.

Also, have you thought about Grand Junction, Colorado? The area is beautiful, and there are several nice B%26amp;Bs as well as a number of nice hotels.

Anyone know some locations to light fireworks in Salt Lake City, Utah?

I need a spot for me and my friends to light off fireworks but we're looking for a secluded place where we wont be bothered by people and not set anything on fire. We have our usual camp spots but there are too many weeds and bushes that could catch fire. It has to be somewhere within reasonable distance of downtown salt lake to draper. If you've got any good suggestions, I'd love to hear them; please be specific with directions.Anyone know some locations to light fireworks in Salt Lake City, Utah?
= Big bangs and crackles interrupted the quiet Friday morning, while streaks of red, white and blue lit up the sky.

At the crack of dawn, Salt Lake City firefighters painted the sky with a multi-color display of pyrotechnics by setting off some of the newly legal aerial "cake" fireworks and repeaters.

To illustrate what can happen if residents aren鈥檛 careful, they showed the improper use of fireworks and the resulting dangers. Flames started to grow on straw and debris after firefighters lit a firework in an area replicating a carport.

"We have seen fires caused by these several times in the past and we are concerned about that," Salt Lake City Fire spokesman Mark Bednarik said.

Aerial "cake" fireworks shooting more than 150 feet into the air were illegal in Utah during last year鈥檚 Fourth of July last year, but the Utah State Legislature recently made some of those professional-looking fireworks legal.

Lighting off fireworks can be a lot of fun, but firefighters are underscoring safety practices ahead of this holiday weekend.

  • Purple geometric shapes when flying over Salt Lake City, UT?

Both times when I flew into/out of Salt Lake City, I noticed large, purple geometric shapes around the lake from the plane. They were BRIGHT purple, not like anything I've ever seen in nature. I have never actually been to SLC, only used the airport as a layover, so I am not familiar with the layout of the land. Any idea what type of landform I am looking at from the sky? Or is it just the way the water appears?Purple geometric shapes when flying over Salt Lake City, UT?
That's a color of certain bacteria. You're probably looking at ponds that have been isolated off the main lake. Ponds like this might be used for:

evaporation, so the salt can be packaged

    or

    growing brine shrimp

I've never been around the Salt Lake. Similar ponds are located around the San Francisco Bay.Purple geometric shapes when flying over Salt Lake City, UT?
    sure...

How vegan friendly is Salt Lake City?

My family and I are all vegans, we have a 17 year old, a 4 year old and I'm expecting another in April. We live in the very vegan friendly Seattle right now but are moving to Salt Lake City. I've done some googling and there seems to be a fair amount of restaurants, some of which we can walk to from our new house and we will be living pretty close to a Whole Foods. But does anyone have experience being a vegan in Salt Lake City? How vegan friendly is Salt Lake City?
Being Vegan in Salt Lake is easy. There are many places throughout the Salt Lake valley where one can find vegans dishes. We have one of the best ranked vegan restaurants as well as a completely vegan bakery/grocery called Cakewalk? If you get to SL and don't know what to do, you can call cakewalk or any of the local vegan establishments, and they will give you all of the info on vegan living in the Salt Lake Valley. They are very friendly and experienced on the subject. I think that you will be surprised how vegan friendly it is once you get here. Here are some links:

Lots more to link but these can help you get a start. It's no Seattle but we are happy with what we have.
Salt lake city is a very friendly place but vegan friendly I would suggest Oregon, Eugene is a good place in Oregon .I live in Idaho and it is a good place too.How vegan friendly is Salt Lake City?
You can be vegan anywhere with a creative mind :)

Why are there bikes with funny signs all over downtown Salt Lake City, Utah?

I was driving in Salt Lake yesterday (Sunday, May 11) and I saw blue spray painted bikes all along the side of the street. They had signs on them like, "I get 20 miles to the organic banana," and "The road less traveled is the bike lane." What are they there for? Is it some sort of ride-share program? Why are there bikes with funny signs all over downtown Salt Lake City, Utah?
    They are promoting cycling.

Bicycles are probably the most efficient form of transportation, non polluting and good for one's health.

You should try it..Why are there bikes with funny signs all over downtown Salt Lake City, Utah?
They are trying to get people to ride there bikes around town. If they do then it will help save money on gasoline.

Is it possible to live in Salt Lake City not being a mormon ?

How is someone who belongs to other religion than mormonism persecuted in Salt Lake City ?Is it possible to live in Salt Lake City not being a mormon ?
Yes. There are plenty of people in Salt Lake who are not Mormon and live there. I mean you're gonna know a lot of Mormons, but people who live there do not get persecuted.
According to the website below, Mormons make up about 60% of Utah's population. I think that Salt Lake has a lower % than that. So yes it is possible. I've heard stories from non-mormons who've lived in Utah that had only praise for them and others that had only criticism. I think it's safe to say each experiences unique circumstances. Is it possible to live in Salt Lake City not being a mormon ?
Salt Lake City is a large metropolitan area with many different types of people. Yes, Mormons have a large presence in SLC but I dont believe you will be persecuted. I toured Temple Square and expected to come across people trying to "convert" me but I did not. They are a very pleasant people who actually do respect other beliefs.
Sixty percent of SLC are not Mormon and of the Mormons, the active ones are the minority. The Mormons helped build the local Catholic Church and elected one of the first Jewish governor's in the nation (the first was in Idaho, of all places, and it is also predominantly Mormon).

What you will find is a love/hate relationship between those of other religions and the Mormons, not the other way around. You often see it in this forum, as well.
Salt Lake is just less than half LDS. You will hardly be persecuted, but some find it obnoxious.

It will depend partly on the neighborhood you pick. Some are quite non-LDS, others are overwhelming.

You will have to put up with a culture that reflects their values as to liquor laws, politics etc, but that has loosened up a lot as they try to attract tourism.

Both local papers are very pro-LDS, although there are smaller more 'underground' type papers available.
Its possible to live anywhere you want in the Uninted States and practice any religion you want. allthough I dont know how long that freedom is going to last because they are taking all of the ppls rights away. they are trying to force churches to preform samesex marriages,Kids cant pray in school you cant even put a bumper sticker thats condones Christianity on your car with out catching flak anymore. and thats not just it they are actually sending kids home or making them turn their shirts inside out just for wearing an american flag on their t-shirts because they are affensive! The goverment is slowly turning us into a communist country and they are using all of our ammendment out of context to do it which is sad for a country founded on Christianity and freedom of speach.
Yes it is! I went to a Christian Church there for the 4 yrs that I lived in Salt Lake. I loved the area, but man is the customer service there horrible. I think the biggest problem is for children there, because almost every high school has a LDS Seminary right next to the campuses of Public schools. The worst treatment I saw was how people acted in your neighborhood, if they found out you were not a Mormon. There was no persecution. Just cant make long life friends if you not Mormon or it's much harder, I should say.

Here is a picture of LDS seminary near school grounds. This one is actually in Idaho and is very far away from the campus, compared to the one in Salt Lake.

Civil law, you can live anywhere in the US and not be a part of the popular religion of that region, that is why they are called inalienable rights.
There is a very large number of non-mormons who live in Salt Lake. Salt Lake is the liberal center of Utah.
Theres more non-Mormons than Mormons in Salt Lake City.
Its not that bad in SLC, but go to the other towns in Utah...its strictly Mormonville there. More by design than anything else.
Half the people there seem to do it just fine, and I don't see any mass Exodus in the works.
cute. not @all persecuted - most of my family is non-LDS and lives in the SLValley.
    yes, many do.

How it is all depends on how you react to being a minority.

Is it safe to paddle the salt lake river?

My family is goin on a trip the salt lake river and they want to air tube up the river and 2 people cant swim in my family and i dont want any problems. I am a nervous wreck over this and i want some help, Is it safe are there any animals that are dangerous and is there many rapids uhg just someone help me.Is it safe to paddle the salt lake river?
Well people have been tubing on the river for more than 40 years so I think it will be safe. By the way you normally float or paddle down a river, not up it. It's much easier going with the current than paddling against it.

Now for the two people who can't swim, I'd suggest life jackets or another flotation device. When people get to horsing around sometimes someone can get into trouble while everyone else is distracted. It's better to be safe than to be sorry, and an inflatable tube is simply not a reliable replacement for a life jacket. If they get separated from the tube and can't swim how do they get back to the tube to keep them afloat? The first thing a non swimmer does in this case is to panic and that's what makes them sink. If a life jacket is too much maybe you can find a wet suit top that will provide flotation instead.

As far as rapids go it sounds like a very lazy river. Sounds like it's a 45 minute drift then you get out and ride back to the beginning and do it all again.

    Hope you have fun..

  • Driving from Salt Lake City to Helena MT?

This august I'll be driving from salt lake city utah to helena, MT for a wedding. I'll be driving with my teenage son, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any sights along the way that are worth checking out?Driving from Salt Lake City to Helena MT?
I've done this run several times (live in Helena / family in Flagstaff). It really depends on how far off the freeway you'd like to go. There's the obvious stops if you don't mind going out a little ways (Craters of the Moon, City of Rocks, Grand Tetons/Yellowstone).

I really enjoy swinging by Crystal Park in Montana. It's a bit out of Dillon and may be too far if you're on a tight schedule. You can spend quite a long time there digging away looking for quartz crystals. We always have fun visiting that park. Bannack Ghost Town is along the way if you want to take a scenic drive along hwy 278 and 43. Beautiful country.

Closer to the freeway: Can anyone say Berkeley Pit in Butte? Who doesn't want to see a toxic superfund site? Beyond that, there aren't a lot of great sites on that stretch of the freeway. I've never thought a whole lot of Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Dillon, or Butte. Helena, though, is a really nice little town to explore.
