I am thinking about relocating to Salt Lake City but I am not sure if it will be a good fit for me. The outdoors-ness of the city is what attracts me most. However, I am a very liberal person both politically and personally. I am not religious and I don鈥榯 have an interest in becoming religious. I also like the nightlife... I like to boogie. Will I clash with the predominately Mormon/conservative population? Or are there parts of town that work for hipster types like myself? Will Salt Lake City be a good move for me?
Sure Salt Lake has a lot of Mormons, but there are lots of people who aren't Mormon and love it here.
You'd have the most common ground with these areas:
Salt Lake: The avenues, Marmalade, West capital hill, sugar house, or downtown. Salt lake is about 45-50% Mormon. Smaller towns tend to be more like 80%.
Also look into Park City or Jeremy Ranch.
If you do move here, you may want to learn a bit about the church as well as the culture.
Get to know your neighbors. Feel free to attend the the neighborhood or "ward" functions often sponsered by the local ward (aka congregation).
In general, it's a clean, safe, welcoming, beautiful city and state...with a little bit of quirkyness.
Don't worry! You will fit right in and you will love it here in Utah! I've lived near Salt Lake all my life and I'm not religious either. Will Salt Lake City be a good move for me?
I'm pretty sure you'll clash, depending upon your age the hipsters are usually rebellious kids just one upping their parents. Hm, minneapolis is a really neat liberal city, have you tried looking into that? Good luck!
Will SLC be a good move for you? Probably not. We lived there for nearly 2 years and loved it, but there are some differences:
1/ We are a family, sounds like you are single
2/ While not Mormon, we are religious, and conservative.
I am sure that there are limited areas that would fit you better. Park City comes right to mind, but that is not SLC. Park City is a good 45 minutes away.
If you like nightlife and dancing, you should check out the laws in Utah.
Alcohol is against the Mormon faith, the state is overwhelmingly Mormon and the laws reflect that. Don't expect to just walk into somewhere and buy a drink. You must order food with alcohol unless it is a club. You must buy memberships to clubs. I don't think that they are particularly expensive, but they must be purchased. One of my husband's single collegues who also liked to go out at night had a billfold filled with all of these little membership cards! It was kind of a joke, but it is also a reality.
I would recommend going out for a visit and see for yourself. Go to the places that you would go on a daily basis and see how it feels.
Would you be renting or buying? Either way, enlist the services of a realtor and get their advice.
As a sidenote, the first question our realtor asked me was whether we were LDS. Didn't even know what she meant! (LDS- Latter Day Saints - the way that the Mormon population refers to themselves)
You cannot discount the Mormon aspect of Utah, but you also cannot disregard the beauty of the outdoors. Like yourselves, we love the outdoors and had some of our best memories made with hikes with our kids. Hike to Mt. Timpanogos if you get out there. Tough hike, but we did it with kids, just very slowly!
Good luck.
it depends. where you at now? why don't you go to phoniex? heard its nice over there. so your a hipster? salt lake would not be the place. i heard hipsters run portland, oregon though. any big city on the coast really.
Plenty of hipsters/scenesters in SLC.
