= Hi! I have lived in the Salt Lake area all my life so let me do my best to answer your questions...
First, yes, it does get VERY warm here during the summer. Right now, we have been experiencing 90's and low 100's. It also gets quite cold in the winter, so it is a great place to live if you want to truly experience all 4 seasons, although fall and spring seem like they always get cut off short. :-) Anyway, it is a very safe place to live. A lot of people choose to raise their families here. There are only a few places you probably want to avoid living in, even though comparatively speaking, they aren't nearly as bad as other cities. You probably want to avoid living in Rose Park (which is northwest Salt Lake City). The city is laid out in a grid which makes it nice to figure out where you are. The center point is the LDS temple downtown, and blocks are named for their distance away from that. So, 2300 South would be 23 "blocks" south of the temple, and 100 South would be 1 "block" south, etc. if you get the idea. I put "block" in quotations because they seem bigger than normal blocks to me, but I could be wrong. Anyway, typically the farther west you go, the cheaper living will be, but it's also not necessarily the best place to live. Most people prefer to live east of I-15, the freeway that runs north and south in Salt Lake City. This is typically about 500 - 800 West. You definitely shouldn't have a problem finding a nice studio for under $500, but if you want bedrooms, it depends on how nice of an apartment you want and how much you are willing to trade on location. You could also look at suburbs around Salt Lake. Bountiful and North Salt Lake are great places to live, and are only 15-20 minutes away from downtown. You could also look at Murray, Holladay, Sandy, and Draper.
